1873 Recueil de prieres: Ornate Double Clasp Binding w/ Paisley Fore-Edge Painting

Recueil de prières, de méditations et de lectures by Comtesse de Flavigny with approval by Cardinal Marlot, printed by Alfred Mame, Tours, France. Published 1873. 

A highly decorative brown Morocco leather binding with intricate gold dentelle tooling on the covers and spine featuring crosses in cover corners, 5 raised bands on the spine, double gold-tone metal clasp closures, all page edges are gold-gilt and feature a hidden paisley fore-edge design, interior gold dentelle borders the chocolate brown moiré silk endpapers, chromolithograph and engravings by L. J. Hallez. 840 pages.   

Comtesse de Falvigny wrote reflective devotional guides tailored to the tastes of upper-class women and noble families during the Second French Empire. Her books were celebrated for their prose and theological insights. She belonged to one of the oldest, most powerful noble families in France (the House of Montesquiou). She married Count Maurice de Flavigny, a prominent French diplomat and politician.
