Derecho Consular: Guía Práctica de los Consulados de España (Consular Law: Practical Guide for the Consulates of Spain) by José Torroba. Published by Sucesores de Rivadeneyra, Madrid, Spain, and bound by Encuadernaciones Nicolás in Ávila, Spain. Published 1927. Spanish Language.
José Torroba was a distinguished Spanish diplomat who served as the Cónsul General de España (Consul General of Spain). When this book was published, standard copies were bound in basic cloth or paper covers for office use.
However, because high-ranking ambassadors and international state ministers used this book, premium copies were custom-bound. Master Spanish bookbinder Encuadernaciones Nicolás bound this edition in the medieval walled city of Ávila, Spain (binder's ticket on the inner back cover).
Bound in full brown leather, this Baroque Revival binding was created using historical roll-tools to mimic the gold-leaf frames of 17th-century Spanish royal libraries.
The front and back covers feature intricate gilded motifs with armorial shield symbols representing the ancient kingdoms that formed Spain, as well as Spain's diplomatic and terrestrial influence. Ships, castle towers, eagles, and lions appear in the cover corners. The spine has five raised bands with additional gilded detail work; all page edges are gauffered with a repeating golden floral-style design; gold dentelle work frames the interior borders; and the endpapers are marbled.
165 mm W x 225 mm H. 776 pages.
Condition: Marks to the front and back covers, wear to the front and back hinges, marks to the spine, rubbing to the corners. Some wear to inner endpaper. Some fading to gold-gilt gauffered pattern on pages. Fair to good condition.
