1860s Paroissien Romain-Eduen | Cross Shield Double Clasp

Paroissien Romain-Eduen. Printed in Autun, France. Published c. 1860 (based on dated approbation and movable feast calendar that runs from 1860-1891). French Language. 

A unique romantic and medieval-style green leather binding with a brass-toned double metal clasp. The clasps feature a heraldic shield-like shape with a cross at the center and leaves at the four base attachment points; all page edges are gold-gilt; four raised bands on the spine; graphic gold dentelle on the interior turn-ins; marbled endpapers; and several engravings throughout the text.  

The original 19th-century bookseller's ticket is also still intact. These tiny, octagonal labels were pasted inside custom volumes to act as a business card for the workshop. It gives us a look into the past and confirms that this book was purchased from A. Durand, who operated a multi-service shop combining a Papeterie (stationery shop), a Librairie (bookshop), and a Reliure (a professional hand-bookbinding workshop) in Mâcon, a historic river city in the Burgundy region of eastern France.

Condition: Marks to covers, some wear to spine and hinge corners, top corners rubbed, some scratches visible on gold gilt of page edge, metal clasps slightly loose but attached, foxing throughout. Good condition.
