L'Imitation de Jésus-Christ (The Imitation of Christ). Published by Gaume Frères, Paris, France, c. 1850-1870. French Language.

A pocket devotional binding in full brown Morocco leather with a repeating grid of gold-tooled stars across the front and back covers; the spine has five raised bands and gold-tooled stars, marbled endpapers, interior gold dentelle border work on interior boards, and all page edges are colored blue with gold gauffered stars.

Inscription that reads: Marie-Jeanne Aucompte, N° 18

In 19th-century French Catholic girls' schools or convents, students were often assigned an inventory number for their personal items, linens, and prayer books. This could offer insight into Marie-Jeanne's past and add an extra layer of history to the book.

Gaume Frères specialized in producing high-quality religious texts and their miniature devotional books from the mid-to-late 1800s. This type of mini devotional was meant to be carried to church, tucked into a vest pocket, or given as gifts for milestones like First Communions.

63 mm W x 93 mm H. 176 pages.

Condition: Some wear to the spine; rubbing to the corners; page-edge paint is faded in some spots; some foxing throughout. Very Good to Good condition.
