The Poetical Works of John Milton with Memoir and Explanatory Notes, bound by D. Howey (includes binder's mark), Dublin, Ireland. Published 1845. 

D. Howey was a master bookbinder operating in Dublin, Ireland, during the mid-to-late 19th century. His bindery specialized in fine leather commissions, particularly using premium full morocco leather (goatskin). His signature look involved extensive, tight, and highly uniform gilt-tooled fleurons and geometric borders. 

During the 19th century, Dublin hosted a highly competitive fine bookbinding industry. Master binderies like Howey's catered to wealthy private collectors, ecclesiastical organizations, and academic institutions like Trinity College. They regularly rebound standard trade editions of poetry, classical literature, and religious works into bespoke works of art. Today, individually signed bindings from Howey are scarce.

A full red morocco leather fine binding with 5 raised bands at the spine, extensive leather tooling of stars and flourishes in gold across front and back covers and spine, all page edges red, gold dentelle details on turn-ins, whimsical book and quill endpapers, and bookbinder's mark on back endpaper. The spine features contrasting leather panels with gold gilt tooling of 'Paradise Lost,' title and author's name.

Condition: Some light marks to cover, slight discoloration to endpapers. Very good to excellent condition.
