A decorative cloth variant in an autumnal burnt orange with darker accents, this copy features illustrations by Hugh Thompson, with an introduction by Austin Dobson. 

The cover features an elaborate Art Nouveau-style blind-embossed floral and leafy scroll across the front cover and spine, with gold-gilt lettering on the front cover and spine; all page edges are gold-gilt.

Flyleaf inscription: "With love & best wishes / from Ethel Peel / 1924." The timing of the inscription and the book's source location suggest that Ethel may have been a relative (great-grandniece) of Sir Robert Peel, the influential 19th-century British Prime Minister.

This volume is part of Macmillan's celebrated Illustrated Standard Novels series, and features line drawings by Hugh Thomson, an acclaimed book illustrator. Thomson is known for his depictions of Jane Austen’s characters and Regency-era fashion.

Condition: Some light discoloration and marks to the front and back covers, marks to the spine, some rubbing to the corners, and some wear to the hinges. Good condition.
