Pierre Saintive. Printed by Alfred Mame, Tours, France. Published 1845. French Language.

A romantic cartonnage binding in black with gold (note: some of the linework looks like a very deep purple in some light); the front and back covers feature stylized vine flourishes and tendrils accompanied by linework; the spine has five raised bands; all page edges are gold-gilt; gold-gilt dentelle work around interior cover boards. Several plates throughout the text.

Pierre Saintive is a moralizing French spiritual novel written in the form of an epistolary narrative (a story told entirely through letters). It was written by Louis Veuillot, who was one of the most influential and controversial figures in 19th-century French Catholicism.

As the fiery editor-in-chief of the newspaper L'Univers, he championed "Ultramontanism" (absolute devotion to the authority of the Pope). Pierre Saintive is one of his major early spiritual novels, focusing on themes of personal redemption, faith, and traditional Catholic values.

140 mm W x 220 mm H. 376 pages.

Condition: Marks to spine, wear to lower front hinge and bottom of spine, marks to board edges, rubbing to corners,  some foxing throughout. Good condition.
